Whether the Supreme Court got Kelo wrong

     Come join us for our first debate of the year where we discuss the Supreme Court decision of Kelo v. New London, which allows the government to take land away from a private owner and give it to another private owner.  Before Kelo, the government would only take land away for the purpose of war or a special need.  

     Clark Neily will be our guest speaker from the Institute of Justice.  Debating him is our very own Professor Sheldon Lyke.  Neily worked on the Kelo case and professor Lyke teaches the case in his property class.  This will be an interesting event to say the least.  To attend please RSVP to whittierlawfedsoc@gmail.com.  We look forward to seeing you there!

HOW YOU CAN JOIN

Step 1:

     Log onto http://www.fed-soc.org/membership to sign up with Nationals and you'll be asked to create and account, pick a student membership and pay the $5 membership fee that gets you all the free stuff that comes with being a member.

Step 2:

    Contact whittierlawfedsoc@gmail.com to let our Student Chapter know you are now a registered member with the National office.  Next, become a member with our student chapter for $5.  All together it only costs $10.  In your email make sure to provide:

      Professor John Eastman and Dean Erwin Chemerinsky will review the U.S. Supreme Court's October 2014 Term, in a lunchtime discussion led by Judge Sandra Ikuta.  Please send an email to la.fedsoc@gmail.com if you wish to attend.  The cost of the luncheon is $35.  Dues-paying members of The Federalist Society may pay a discounted rate of $25. For more information click here.

      Professors John Yoo and John Eastman were both law clerks for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarance Thomas.  They both also shares some of the same views, but their individuals views on Obergefell v.       Ilya Shapiro is a senior fellow in constitutional studies at the Cato Institute and editor-in-chief of the Cato Supreme Court Review.  Shapiro is the co-author of Religious Liberties for Corporations?  Hobby Lobby, the Affordable Care Act, and the Constitution.  He will be speaking on recent Supreme Court cases.

            At Whittier Law School our Student Chapter strives to uphold the mission statement of The Federalist Society and facilitate a forum for open discussion on topics that affect the legal community.  We are a group that studies both law and public policy through lunchtime discussions, debates, panels, and speaking engagements.  We are the only organization on campus that creates events for student, lawyers, and faculty to gather and discuss issues openly.
